Klopp Can Learn From Apprentice Wagner | Team Whispers: Liverpool
  • 6 years ago
With just two wins in their last ten games in all competitions, Jürgen Klopp needs to improve things at Anfield and fast. So in our latest edition of Team Whispers, we look ahead to the challenge of Huddersfield, discuss who the club should target in January with fans, and explain why people should maybe look differently at Daniel Sturridge.

A difficult start to the Premier League campaign for Liverpool continued last weekend with a 4-1 defeat to an organised Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium. And things don’t get much easier for them, as this Saturday they welcome Huddersfield Town to Anfield.

The newly-promoted Terriers have taken to life in the top tier with surprising ease. Their latest performance was arguably their finest yet, as they defeated Manchester United. They are managed by David Wagner, who previously coached Borussia Dortmund’s reserves at the same time as Jurgen Klopp led the German giants’ first team.

The Liverpool boss would do well do follow his former apprentice’s lead and make his side tougher to beat. Only five teams in the Premier League have let in more than their 16 so far. Indeed, up to this point they have conceded at an astonishing rate of 1.8 goals per game.

If the Reds want to reach the promised land of the Champions League next season, they will need to secure a top four spot. For that to happen, their defensive record has to improve, and soon.

In the latest episode of Team Whispers, we also look at the statistics that show why Virgil van Dijk remains their primary defensive target and analyse Sturridge’s changing role as the Englishman looks to force his way into Klopp’s starting XI.
