Surfers perform amazing 'double ride' in season's first major swell

Remarkable footage of two surfers simultaneously riding a giant wave during the first big swell of the winter season in Nazaré, Portugal.

The video, captured by Portuguese videographer Pedro Miranda on October 21 off Praia do Norte, shows Brazilians Carles Burle and Rodrigo Koxa performing a rare "double ride" on a gigantic wave.

Later on they end up being swallowed by the wave.

''During the session, which was stormy and uncommonly dangerous, the Brazilian surfers had the chance to do something that doesn’t happen very often, especially in Nazaré: to share one of the biggest waves of the day,'' the filmer later wrote online.

''Carlos Burle, caught the wave first, and Rodrigo Koxa a few seconds later. They were both fully committed, which means that after realising they were both on the wave, they could not exit it,'' he added, describing their accidental "double ride" of the same enormous wave.

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous for huge waves since Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a then record in 2011 for the largest wave ever surfed when he rode a 78-foot wave.
