Indian Housekeeper Is Begging For Rescue From Her Saudi Arabian Employer
  • 7 years ago
A recently released video shows a 38-year-old Indian woman begging authorities to rescue her from her Saudi Arabian employer.

Rina Rani came to Saudi Arabia to earn money for her family back home in Jalandhar, India, but now she says she's being held captive by two men and forced to work in slave-like conditions. In the video, which was published Oct. 10, she also accused her employer of torture and starvation. Following the video's release, India's Minister of External Affairs says she's ordered the embassy in Riyadh to retrieve Rani.

There are more than 1.5 million foreigners working as maids in Saudi Arabia, many of whom claim they are being mistreated and have weak legal protections. The video is refocusing attention on the plight of these foreign workers.
