Saudi National Day Celebrates A New Era For Women

This year, and for the first time ever, women participated in Saudi Arabia's National Day.

As thousands gathered in Riyadh to celebrate Saudi Arabia's founing, women were allowed to join their families in the stadium. But many Saudis voiced their opposition, believing it went against the country's religious code.

Saudi Arabia follows the Wahhabi school of Islam, which enforces strict gender segregation and denies equal rights to women. But Saudi Arabia's 87th National Day marks a turning point for women's rights in the country. After a longstanding ban was recently overturned, women will also be allowed to drive for the first time. It remains to be seen how many more rights Saudi women will gain in the coming years.
