White House Suggests Senate Should ‘Stop Taking Vacations’ To Get Things Done

The White House has suggested that Senate vacations may be to blame for President Trump’s lack of progress on key issues.
During a press briefing Tuesday, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about the president’s tax reform agenda amid ongoing conflicts with Republican lawmakers.
“The President is very committed to getting tax reform done," Sanders said. "Look, he's calling on Congress to get their job done. They're on another vacation right now.”
“I think that we would all be a lot better off if the Senate would stop taking vacations and start staying here until we actually get some real things accomplished. The President is here, and he's committed to working with them to do that," Sanders added.
Lawmakers are given several breaks away from Washington, D.C. throughout the year, though the extended summer recess in August of this year was delayed due to work on health care reform.
Despite outside criticisms of these so-called vacations, the National Constitution Center has pointed out that much of this time can be spent fundraising, laying the groundwork for potential bills, and connecting with hometown constituents.
Meanwhile, Trump has been called out in the past for his own personal travel away from the White House; the Washington Post reported two months ago that “by the end of August, Trump will have spent all or part of 53 days in office at leisure, compared with 15 days for [former President] Obama through August 2009.”
