Astronauts Replace End of Station's Robotic Arm in Spacewalk
  • 7 years ago
Outside the International Space Station, Expedition 53 Commander Randy Bresnik and Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei of NASA conducted a spacewalk Oct. 5 to replace one of two duplicate latching end effectors on the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Used to grapple visiting spacecraft and payloads, the end effector’s latching mechanism motors stalled in August. The issue had no impact on station operations. The spacewalk was the first of three to be conducted by U.S. astronauts out of the Quest airlock through Oct. 18 to replace and lubricate the end effector and swap out video cameras on the station’s truss. It was the 203rd spacewalk in support of space station assembly and maintenance, the third in Bresnik’s career and the first for Vande Hei.
