'We have to apply the referendum result,' says Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont today (October 4) saying that the referendum result, which saw the Catalan people vote for independence from Spain, had to be applied.

It comes just one day after he announced that Catalonia could declare its independence in the coming days.

Puigdemont previously said that his government would “act at the end of this week or the beginning of next” concerning Catalan’s independence from Spain.

The speech also follows a rare intervention from King Philip VI of Spain who said Catalan leaders had put themselves “outside the law”.

Puigdemont was critical of the king’s speech saying it was an opportunity for him to address all citizens, but his reaction was “inadequate” and he “continued to justify” the Spanish government’s actions inadequate.
