'Fought tooth and nail against EU' IDS praises Theresa May as he declares UK finally free
IAIN Duncan Smith has praised Theresa May's Brexit speech in Florence as he declared that Britain's era in the European Union "will soon be over for good". Mrs May said she wanted the UK and EU to maintain access to each other’s markets “on current terms” during the transition period.She said the length of the implementation period was to be negotiated but that current considerations suggest it will be for two years.The UK may therefore have to accept freedom of movement rules for the duration of the implementation period. Mr Duncan Smith admitted that Brexiteers can live with Mrs May's proposed two-year transition but it must be strictly limited.The eurosceptic said: "Article 50 is very clear: we are leaving the EU on March 29, 2019. That’s it done end of story. It’s what we have signed up for and it cannot be changed.”The MP for Chingford and Woodford Green added: “The most powerful part was her upbeat statement that leaving the EU will be good for us.”
The speech had been widely regarded as a make-or-break attempt to help Brexit talks.Mr Duncan Smith said: “The money she offered is the strongest hand the Government has in getting a proper free trade agreement with the EU."My only concern is that we are offering it too early. We shouldn’t be thinking of getting out the chequebook until they agree to discuss trade arrangements alongside the details of our exit."
