Not a clEU! Barnier admits he ‘DOESN’T KNOW what to do’ on Brexit
MICHEL Barnier has admitted he “doesn’t know what to do” if the UK refuses to pay the divorce bill the bloc is demanding as the price of Brexit. In a series of recent speeches, Mr Barnier has stressed the UK must make good on its commitment before Brexit negotiations can move forward. He said: “How do you build a future relationship if there’s no trust, if you haven’t honoured your commitments?“I don’t know how to do that.“We don’t accept to pay as 27 [nations] what has been decided at 28. It’s as simple as that. No way.” Brussels has recently demanded £53billion for the divorce bill.Early reports suggest that Theresa May would be prepared pay £18billion (€20billion) during a post-Brexit transition period, but only it included access to the bloc's single market.But hardline Brexiteers have argued that the Britain should not have to pay a penny.
Speaking earlier this month, MEP Nigel Farage said: “Article 50 makes it clear that the withdrawing member state, once Article 50 has been concluded, has no further obligations – that’s what the treaty says.”Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said there was “no logic” to the £53billion figure.He said: “Legally we owe nothing.”. 00FastNews.
