Inmates Run This Gourmet Restaurant Inside A Colombian Women’s Prison

Your next five-star meal might come from a women's prison.

"Interno" is a restaurant run by female inmates inside Colombia’s San Diego Women’s District Prison. They were trained by well-known chefs and have been serving gourmet dishes since 2016. About 170 inmates were taught cooking and baking, but only 20 made the cut to work as cooks and waitresses in the restaurant.

It’s part of a foundation called Alternative Inmate Action, which has helped more than 4,000 inmates throughout Colombia in workshops for knitting, baking, and theater. The goal is to increase inmates' self-confidence and give them the skills to have a second chance at life.
