Roy Moore, the current Republican front-runner in Alabama’s forthcoming Senate special election, has said in the past that, “Homosexual conduct should be illegal.”
He made the comment during a 2005 interview on C-SPAN2's 'After Words' to promote his book at the time, 'So Help Me God.'
When host Bill Press confirmed that Moore’s statement applied to the private behavior of consenting adults, the author said, “It is immoral, it is defined by the law as ‘detestable,’ it was against the law in most states until the Supreme Court...said that it wasn’t.”
In fact, the conversation began after Press had read an excerpt from Moore’s book where he wrote, “Homosexual conduct is and has been considered abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature, and a violation of the laws of nature and nature’s god upon which the nation and our laws are predicated.”
Moore is a Christian conservative who has had a history of speaking out and fighting against gay rights, notes CNN.
Last September, he was suspended as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court when a judicial panel found him guilty of ethics violations after he directed the state’s probate judges to refrain from issuing same-sex marriage licenses, defying a federal order.
Despite his controversial past, WBRC reports that Moore leads Luther Strange, his Republican rival for the Senate seat, by six percentage points.
The media outlet notes that the former judge is being supported by Sarah Palin while Strange is said to be backed by President Trump and Vice President Pence.
