Hurricane Maria LIVE: 5am update from the National Hurricane Center - NOAA latest path
HURRICANE Maria continues to batter the Dominican Republic and is bearing down on the Turks and Caicos, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center’s 5am update. Maria was briefly downgraded to category 2 after making landfall on Puerto Rico yesterday, but has since restrengthened to a major category 3 hurricane.Maximum sustained winds are holding at 115mph, though they could increase further as Hurricane Maria bends north through tomorrow.Maria was last located about 70 miles north of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and about 220 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island, the capital of the Turks and Caicos. The hurricane is moving at a steady 9mph and is forecast to pass the Turks and Caicos later today. Strong winds and torrential rain continue to lash the northeastern Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, but conditions should improve as Maria edges away. The latest NOAA NHC advisory said: “On the forecast track, the eye of Hurricane Maria will continue to pass offshore of the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic today.  “Maria should then move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas tonight and Friday.“Heavy rainfall is expected to continue, and catastrophic flash flooding is occurring in Puerto Rico, especially in areas of mountainous terrain.   “Everyone in Puerto Rico should continue to follow advice from local officials to avoid these life-threatening flooding conditions.”Dangerous storm surges and violent waves will raise water levels by as much as four to six foot in the hurricane warning zones of the Dominican Republic, while other areas of the nation and Haiti could see one to three foot surges. Water levels in Puerto Rico are expected to recede over the next few hours, according to the NHC. Maria is expected to produce the following rainfall totals through Saturday:Puerto Rico...20 to 30 inches, isolated 35 inches.US and British Virgin Islands...additional 3 to 5 inches.Northern and eastern Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, and the Southeastern Bahamas...8 to 16 inches, isolated 20 inches.Northern Haiti...2 to 4 inches.Rainfall on these islands will continue to cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
