Theresa May takes shock swipe at Donald Trump over Paris climate deal in UN speech
THERESA May launched a shock attack on ally Donald Trump during her speech at the United Nations General Assembly. “And it is this rules-based system which we have developed — including the institutions, the international frameworks of free and fair trade; agreements such as the Paris climate accord; and laws and conventions like the Non-Proliferation Treaty — which enables the global co-operation through which we can protect those values.”Mrs May warned against undermining international institutions saying it was against national interests.President Trump drew criticism from leaders throughout the world after he took the decision to abandoned the Paris deal after criticising the accord on the campaign trail.
Speaking of the Paris accord Mrs May said: “If this system we have created is found no longer to be capable of meeting the challenges of our time — then there will be a crisis of faith in multilateralism and global co-operation that will damage the interests of all our peoples.”The Tory leader also took a tough stance on the UN itself in her speech vowing to withhold funding until the organisation demonstrates better value for money.The Prime Minister said: “The UN and its agencies must win our trust by proving to us and the people we represent that they can deliver. “That is why we will remain generous in our funding but set aside 30 percent to be paid only to those parts of the UN that achieve sufficient results.”The US President caused a stir with his own address to the General Assembly after threatening the “totally destroy” North Korea if the dictatorship threatened America or its allies. He said: “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.The North Korean Foreign Minister responded by mocking Donald Trump and comparing the President to a “barking dog”.. 00FastNews.
