Famous wild Dartmoor ponies captured and MINCED into BURGERS
A PAIR of Devon farmers are serving up a range of meat products made from wild horse in a bid to champion the food as a new delicacy. Traditionally the consumption of horse in the UK is something of a taboo, but Mrs Faulkner, 55, said by promoting the benefits of the meat, she hoped to save hundreds of foals from being culled.Mrs Faulkner said out of the 750 foals born on Dartmoor every year, about 400 are shot and used for animal feed because of a lack of demand from businesses that would traditionally make use of the animals, such as riding schools. She argued that if more farmers came around to the idea of raising the foals for meat, the animals would be allowed to live until the age of three.She said: "A farmer, knowing that there is a meat trade as a fall-back, is more confident keeping that pony until that age."People seem to be surprised to see pony meat is high in protein and low in fat - everything we look for in food." But Angela Pitts, of Hill Pony Resources, said that raising foals to be slaughtered for meat was a "travesty".The charity works to find new homes for Dartmoor ponies and reduce the number born wild on the moor each year.She added: "The hill ponies are great animals, very warm and affectionate.". 00FastNews.
