Australians use Brexit to demand vote to SCRAP Queen to stop ‘clinging to Little Britain'
REPUBLICANS in Australia and New Zealand are pushing for a referendum on getting rid of the monarchy - because of Brexit. “Well, it’s one thing to be aligned with Great Britain, but with Little Britain? Would it not be pathetic for Australia to be clinging to the ankles of what’s left?”Republicans in both Australia and New Zealand do not back Prince Charles becoming king and are split on whether to hold a vote on axing the monarchy or wait for the Queen to pass away or abdicate. Mr FitzSimons said: “We could wait for the Queen to die, and as the world gathers to say farewell, who slips out the back? Australia. “Or we could do this while the Queen’s still young enough to hand us the keys. We could rise as one, give her a thunderous standing ovation, and say: ‘Your majesty, thank you, we will take it from here’.”And Jacinda Ardern, leader of New Zealand’s Labour Party, also wants a debate in getting rid of the monarchy.Ms Ardern, challenging to become the next Prime Minister in the country’s September 23 election, admitted Elizabeth was “much loved”. But she told The Times: “I am a republican.“It’s certainly not about my view of the monarchy but my view of New Zealand’s place in the world and carving out our own future.”A recent poll carried out by the Australian newspaper showed 51 per cent of people wanted an Australian head of state, with only 38 per cent backing the monarchy.

But a study published last January showed support for the monarchy had actually increased since Australia rejected becoming a republic in 1999.And, although Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has ruled out any new vote on the issue while the Queen is alive, he has backed a referendum at the end of her reign.Monarchists in both countries have now pledged to fight any such plans and point out that William, Kate and Harry are still hugely popular. Chairman of the Australian Monarchists’ League, Philip Benwell, told Politico that the country would not back a republic. He said: “People would realise that it’s the system that matters, not necessarily the person that is the head of state.“There is tremendous interest and confidence in the younger royals, and they have established a close rapport with the Australian people.”. 00FastNews.
