Jeremy Corbyn plots Labour power grab to make party MORE left wing
JEREMY Corbyn is planning radical changes to the set up of the Labour party, as he attempts to secure his power base from the left wing. The Labour leader is set to unveil his plans at a meeting of the party’s governing National Executive Committee (NEC) today in a bid to limit the control MPs have in deciding the left-wing party’s leader.Jeremy Corbyn will put forward a plan to have a “broad review into democracy and participation,” according to two officials who indicated the wording was effectively code for limiting the power of MPs.The review is likely to adopt proposals from the left, which do not yet have enough support from the NEC to gain approval, one union official stated. The changes to the party structure now are believed to be a way of taking control of the party’s ruling body and to smooth the way ahead for future reforms. The move comes at a time when the party is seen as being divided not only over the question of the party’s stance on Brexit but also the Blairite faction who support pro-market policies and the more leftist groups like Momentum. The proposed review is expected to advocate reducing the threshold needed to get on future leadership ballots from 15 per cent of MPs to five per cent, allowing left wing candidates more chance of appearing on candidate lists, according to the two officials who spoke to Politico.Another proposal which is likely to be controversial is the move to stop “affiliated” and “registered” Labour party supporters having a vote in leadership elections and just have full members to have a vote, this would remove those who are affiliated union members and short-term supporters. The 68-year-old is also said to want to introduce interim measures to the NEC in an attempt to “democratise” the party whilst the review is carried out.He hopes to increase the representation of ordinary party members and trade unions on the NEC with positions for three members from grassroots Labour parties and one from the unions, this would mean the balance of power tips the NEC in favour of Mr Corbyn.Another interim measure would be to reduce the threshold for getting a nominee onto the leadership ballot paper from 15 to 10 per cent. A Labour official close to Mr Corbyn said: “These proposals show that Jeremy is enhancing democracy and members’ participation in the party. Our mass membership is full of the ideas, energy and skills we need to win elections to form a government for the many not the few — and these changes will help our membership deliver that goal.”The union official said the plan would be welcomed by those on the left of the party but added there would be some disappointment that the plans did not go far enough. The union representative said: “They will be happy, it’s good for them, but it’s not as good as they wanted. It’s a compromise.” Any proposed changes will have to be voted on by the NEC on Tuesday ahead of the party conference which begins on Sunday in Brighton where party members could agree to the changes.Mr Corbyn has been empowered by the results of a poll of delegates by Momentum which found that 844 of the 1,155 delegates planning to attend the conference, backed reforms to democratise the party. While there appears to be growing support for changes to the party structure, the proposals could still be blocked by the powerful unions as well as MPs on the right of the party.. 00FastNews.
