CNN’s Don Lemon has suggested that President Trump should first apologize for the claims he made against former President Obama before demanding he get one from ESPN.
The news host was leaving an airport when a TMZ reporter asked him about the recent Trump tweet, reading, “ESPN is paying a really big price for its politics (and bad programming). People are dumping it in RECORD numbers. Apologize for untruth!”
The comment was apparently referring to controversial tweets ESPN host Jemele Hill had posted last week about the president including calling him, “a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.”
“I think when the president worked for NBC [on] ‘The Apprentice,’ he said that Barack Obama was not born here and he called Barack Obama a racist," Lemon told the reporter. "If [Trump] apologizes for that, then maybe ESPN should apologize.”
Meanwhile, the White House has taken a harder line stance against Hill, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying that her social media remarks were “a fireable offense by ESPN.”
Sanders reiterated the point at a subsequent press briefing, adding that ESPN was being hypocritical given that it had previously suspended another anchor for “expressing a political viewpoint.”
“The comments on Twitter from Jemele Hill regarding the President do not represent the position of ESPN," the network said in a statement Tuesday. "We have addressed this with Jemele and she recognizes her actions were inappropriate.”
The following day, Hill tweeted her own message.
“My comments on Twitter expressed my personal beliefs. My regret is that my comments and the public way I made them painted ESPN in an unfair light," Hill stated. "My respect for the company and my colleagues remains unconditional.”
