December 2nd, 1985. The debut of the worlds greatest, most powerful rock band. Born of desperation like so much great art, Cold Slither was a broke Cobra Commanders last chance to take over America. With beautiful riffs. And subliminal messages.\r
\r
G.I. Joe was the first ever product to be marketed as an ion figure. Launched by Hasbro in 1964, the prevailing wisdom of the time was that boys would never play with dolls. So the Joes, while very doll-like, were instead Americas movable fighting man. \r
\r
The very similar Johnny Hero came out one year later but was marketing as a boys doll. And thats why Channing Tatum isnt in a Johnny Hero doll . \r
\r
G.I Joe evolved quickly. Hasbro licensed the figures to the U.K, where they became known as Action Man, and Germany, where they were the Action Team. In the 1970s, there was an attempt to distance the figures from the ual American army, which was fighting an unpopular war overseas. They added a black guy -- and kung-fu grip.\r
\r
They also added life-like hair, which was evidently a major selling point during the little-discussed great hair crisis of 1970.\r
\r
In 1982, G.I. Joe evolved again, this time mimicking the much smaller and insanely successful 3 3/4 size Star Wars figures. With the new look came a new tagline -- A Real American Hero.\r
\r
Even though using a cartoon to advertise a toy was technically illegal in the first half of 1980s, Hasbro launched the G.I. Joe animated mini- in 83. By 1985, it was a full-blown show. \r
\r
Created by Sunbow Productions, the animation arm of the very same advertising firm who co-engineered the G.I. Joe rebrand alongside Marvel, the G.I. Joe cartoon catapulted the ion figures into the toy stratosphere. It ran for 95 s. And one of them -- one perfect-- was called Cold Slither.\r
\r
So the Joes raid Cobras secret cave and bankrupt Cobra. Proving that this cartoon was indeed created in the 80s, Cobra Commanders genius plan to regain his power and make mad money? Operation Cold Slither. Start a band.\r
\r
Enlisting Zartan and the Dreadnoks to record a song he will later insert subliminal messages into, Cobra Commander films a music video and, of course, reaches the top of the charts. Cold Slither is the worlds most popular rock band. Everyone is brainwashed.\r
\r
But dont worry! By disguising themselves as groupies, which is kind of messed up, several of the female Joes take out the Dreadnoks and stop the subliminal messages. But what about the audience that paid to see a rock and roll show? The Joes have that one covered, because apparently, theyve also been a band this whole time.\r
