This Record-Setting Glider Hopes To Reach The Edge Of Space

This glider just soared into the record books.

The Airbus Perlan II reached over 52,000 feet on Sunday, the highest altitude ever for an engineless glider. It surpassed the previous record of 50,727 feet, which was set by Perlan I back in 2006.

The flight took place in the Patagonia region of Argentina, where rising air currents happen a few times a year and provide optimal conditions.

The ultimate goal of the Perlan Project is to reach the edge of space at 90,000 feet, and to continue "scientific experiments to explore the mysteries of the stratosphere."
