Actress Jennifer Lawrence is being criticized for appearing to characterize Hurricanes Harvey and Irma as Mother Nature’s response to President Trump’s election victory and his doubts about climate change.
During a recent appearance on the U.K.’s Channel 4 to promote her new film "Mother!" the Oscar winner was asked about the changes the U.S. has undergone over the past year.
“It’s scary. You know, it’s this new language that’s forming. I don’t even recognize it. It’s also scary to know--it’s been proven through science--that climate change is due to human activity," Lawrence said. "And we continue to ignore it, and the only voice that we really have is through voting.”
Lawrence continued, “And we voted and it was really startling. You know, you're watching these hurricanes now, and it's really hard especially while promoting this movie, not to feel Mother Nature's rage and wrath.”
In response to her comments, some on social media blasted her; one person wrote, “Jennifer Lawrence thinks hurricanes are America's rightful punishment for voting Trump. Skip her movies from now on.”
Another user echoed the sentiment by saying, “...Jennifer Lawrence begs Trump's deplorable supporters to not watch her movies, doesn't want us as fans. Don't worry, DONE.”
Lawrence has long been an outspoken critic of Trump; in October 2015, she told Entertainment Weekly, “If Donald Trump becomes president, that will be the end of the world.”
