United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley has confirmed that she was initially approached to be President Trump’s secretary of state but turned down the offer, reports CNN.

United Nations, or U.N., ambassador Nikki Haley has confirmed that she was initially approached to be President Trump’s secretary of state but turned down the offer.
As Haley told CNN, “I’m very aware of when things are right and when they are not. I just thought he could find someone better.”
According to the news outlet’s recent profile on her, the former governor had, at the time, planned to finish her term in South Carolina but was soon approached by the administration to be the U.S.'s top diplomat to the U.N.
She ultimately accepted the position but not before guaranteeing herself Cabinet-level status and a seat on the National Security Council; Haley also recalled that she had told the president beforehand, “I don’t want to be a wallflower or a talking head. I want to be able to speak my mind,” and he agreed.
Haley has since been a high-profile member of the Trump administration; earlier this week, she told the U.N. Security Council that when it comes to North Korea’s nuclear threats, “enough is enough.”
ABC News reports that in addition to calling for tougher sanctions on the regime, she announced that, “the United States will look at every country that does business with North Korea as a country that is giving aid to their reckless and dangerous nuclear intentions.”
Haley also recently raised alarm bells about the possibility that Iran may not be complying with the nuclear weapons ban enacted by former President Obama, notes the Los Angeles Times.
The U.N. ambassador will be featured on the cover of a forthcoming Time magazine special edition focusing on women who have made a pioneering impact on the world.
She has the distinction of being the first Indian-American female in U.S. history to be elected governor.
