The relationship between President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been a rocky one as of late.
Politico reported on Wednesday that the two “met privately on Tuesday in a bid to repair their badly frayed relationship, according to sources familiar with the meeting.”
The publication further states, “Trump and McConnell huddled privately for roughly 20 minutes ahead of a larger gathering of Republican leaders and officials working on tax reform.”
The friction between them is said to stem, in part, from the July Senate vote against repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Trump blasted the senator in a series of tweets; on August 9, he wrote, “Senator Mitch McConnell said I had ‘excessive expectations,’ but I don't think so. After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?”
The president then tweeted a day later, "Mitch, get back to work and put Repeal & Replace, Tax Reform & Cuts and a great Infrastructure Bill on my desk for signing. You can do it!"
Trump is said to have been angered by a speech the Kentucky senator gave in which he indicated that Trump may have “excessive expectations” of the lawmaking process due to his relative inexperience in D.C.
McConnell has reportedly made a number of digs at Trump in private as well.
The New York Times notes that, according to knowledgeable sources, they include musings, “about whether Mr. Trump will be in a position to lead the Republican Party into next year’s elections and beyond," and, “describing Mr. Trump as entirely unwilling to learn the basics of governing.”
