German Graffiti Artists Erase Swastikas With Art

Horrified by the increasing number of swastikas found scrawled on public places, a group of Berlin-based graffiti artists started a campaign to cover the hateful imagery with art.

The "Paintback Initiative" was started by artist Ibo Omari, who now teaches youth how to cover up swastikas that are spotted in their communities. Whenever a Nazi symbol is spotted, the artist creates a design and gets permission from the building's owner to cover the hateful imagery.

Omari's work can be spotted easily, as it includes the tag #PAINTBACK beneath each fixed artwork.

So far, the group has covered more than 25 swastikas.
