A professor with the University of Tampa was dismissed following his tweets regarding Hurricane Harvey, Texas Trump voters, and karmic retribution, notes the Tampa Bay Times.
According to Campus Reform, the first Sunday tweet from Kenneth Storey, who at the time was a visiting assistant professor of sociology, read, “I don’t believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn’t care about them.”
When a commenter pointed out that Texas is home to many good people, Storey reportedly responded, “Well, the good people there need to do more to stop the evil their state pushes. I’m only blaming those who support the GOP there.”
The two continued their exchange, with the commenter asking if Trump voters in Florida deserved the same fate.
Storey reportedly said, “Yep, those who voted for him here deserve it as well.”
The then-professor later apologized for and deleted the tweets, but they had already gained traction on social media.
On Tuesday, the University of Tampa circulated a statement on the matter.
In addition to announcing Storey’s dismissal, it stressed, “visiting assistant professor of sociology Kenneth Storey made comments on a private Twitter account that do not reflect UT's community views or values. We condemn the comments and the sentiment behind them, and understand the pain this irresponsible act has caused.”
