Hillary Clinton has made it clear that she is opposed to President Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military.
In a Thursday morning tweet, she wrote "correct," while sharing VoteVets’ statement, “There's NO reason for a transgender ban. Military isn't asking for it. Americans don't want it. This is about Trump embrace of hate. Period.”
President Trump made the announcement via Twitter about a month ago. “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military," Trump said. "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
The statement triggered backlash and raised questions about its execution. A New York Times report on Wednesday provided some details.
“President Trump is preparing to give the Defense Department formal authority to expel transgender people from the military in an upcoming order, barring the Pentagon from recruiting transgender troops and cutting off payment for sexual reassignment surgery and other medical treatments for those already serving,” The Times noted. “A White House memo that is expected to be sent to the Pentagon in coming days gives Jim Mattis, the secretary of defense, six months to enforce the transgender ban…”
