The mayor of Venice, Italy has stirred controversy after announcing a new security measure, reports The Times.
Speaking at a recent conference in Rimini, Luigi Brugnaro said, “If someone shouts Allahu Akbar while running through St Mark's Square, we'll shoot them. A year ago, I said [they’d be shot] after four steps, now I’m saying it would happen after three."
Newsweek notes that “Allahu Akbar” is an Arabic phrase that translates to “God is great.”
According to Yahoo News, during his address, he also commented, “We need to increase our security when it comes to terrorism. We had four would-be terrorists arrested in Venice a few months ago who wanted to blow up the Rialto bridge. They said they wanted to go and meet Allah so we will send them straight to Allah without having to throw them off the bridge, we will just shoot them.”
While many laughed, Dario Nardella, the mayor of Florence, responded by shouting, “Allahu Akbar.”
Nardella has since apologized for any offense he may have caused, stressing that none was intended.
