New Zealand-based environmentalists are gaining support for their project, called Trump Forest, which was launched to “soak up the extra greenhouse gases [President] Trump plans to put into [the] atmosphere.”
According to a Huffington Post report, “Dr. Daniel Price, Adrien Taylor and Jeff Willis, all in their 20s, said they felt compelled to act after Trump signed an executive order in March that essentially prioritized the fossil fuel industry over the environment.”
The executive order, titled, “Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth,” supports rolling back regulations in the energy sector and rescinds several environmental measures enacted by the Obama administration under the Clean Power Plan.
The activists launched the initiative that same month, stating, “We're planting a global forest to offset Trump's monumental stupidity.”
Taylor also told the BBC, “Only a small percentage of the world voted him in, but we all have to deal with the consequences of his climate ignorance.”
Instead of soliciting donations, the project asks people to “pay for and plant trees anywhere in the world in the name of Donald Trump…”
Receipts are then sent in and added to a global tally.
As the website explains, “If the Trump Forest covers an area of approximately...37,000 square miles, about the size of the U.S. state of Kentucky, it will offset the additional carbon in the atmosphere if the Clean Power Plan is removed.”
