Crowd Chants 'Shame on You' at Unite the Right Press Conference

Protesters at a Unite the Right press conference in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanted “shame on you” at organizers on Sunday, August 13. Organizer Jason Kessler was scheduled to speak but was “chased” away by the demonstrators, according to reports.The previous day, August 12, one person died and others were injured after a car plowed into a crowd mostly comprised of anti-white nationalist demonstrators, though some white nationalist marchers were present. The rally was organized by Unite the Right.Kessler issued a statement on Sunday morning and it was posted to Twitter by a NBC 29 anchor: “The blame for today’s violence is primarily the result of the Charlottesville government officials and the law enforcement officers which failed to maintain law and order by protecting the First Amendment rights of the participants of the ‘Unite the Right’ rally,” the statement said.The Albemarle Regional Jail named James Alex Fields Jr., 20, as the suspect in the vehicle attack. He was charged with one count of second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident that resulted in a death. Heather Heyer was identified as the victim killed in the incident.Later in the day, two Virginia State Police personnel heading to assist in the Charlottesville situation were killed in a helicopter crash.
