President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort is said to be the person who blew the whistle about the meeting Donald Trump Jr. had arranged with a Russian lawyer.

President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort is said to be the person who blew the whistle about the meeting Donald Trump Jr. had arranged with a Russian lawyer.
According to Bloomberg, “Manafort had alerted authorities to a controversial meeting on June 9, 2016, involving [President] Trump’s son Donald Jr., other campaign representatives and a Russian lawyer promising damaging information on Hillary Clinton, according to people familiar with the matter.”
The New York Times broke the story about the meeting last month, adding that Manafort and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who also attended, “disclosed the meeting, though not its content, in confidential government documents described to The New York Times.”
Trump Jr. has since admitted to the session but claimed that nothing substantive came out of it.
The detail about Manafort has emerged as investigators seem to be focusing in on him as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing probe into Russia’s efforts to influence the 2016 election and potential ties with the Trump campaign.
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Manafort’s Virginia home was unexpectedly raided by authorities in the early morning hours of July 26, with numerous financial and other documents being seized with a search warrant.
It may be part of a money trail Mueller and his team appear to be following in the probe including the possibility that Manafort may have laundered funds from Russia.
A lawyer for President Trump has since reportedly blasted the home raid; according to Fox News, John Dowd said in an email that it was an “extraordinary invasion of privacy.”
The outlet adds, “The email reflects Trump’s legal team moving to protect the president, amid speculation that the raid could be part of a broader effort to squeeze Manafort for information on Trump.”
