Sea World in Gold Coast, Queensland, unveiled the name of its female polar bear cub as Mishka on Wednesday morning, August 9. Mishka means “little bear” in Russian and Inuit.Sea World said in a statement that the name Mishka was one of four considered that paid homage to the cub’s mother, Liya, who is Russian, and father Hudson, who has Inuit heritage. Mishka was chosen as the winning name in an online vote on the park’s website. Nearly 30,000 people took part in the poll.Mishka was one of two polar bear cubs born to Liya on April 26. The other cub died a few weeks later.“Mishka is a great name for the adorable little cub as it has heritage in both the Russian and Inuit cultures which ties in nicely to her parents Liya and Hudson,” said Polar Bear Shores Supervisor Tacha Mulligan.“Her strength has also developed to a stage where we expect she will make her public debut in the coming weeks, though this will be determined by mum Liya when she thinks the cub is ready.” Credit: Sea World Gold Coast via Storyful
