Renowned physicist Albert Einstein posed for many photos in his lifetime, but among the most memorable and popular is the image of him sticking out his tongue.
An early print of that photograph was sold at auction on July 27 for $125,000.
Offered by Nate D. Sanders Auctions, the photo measures roughly 7 inches by 10 inches and includes Einstein’s signature.
According to the auction house, the image was taken, “on his 72nd birthday…by…a UPI photographer whose employers were at first hesitant about publishing the iconoclastic image of Einstein; when they did, Einstein was so amused by it that he ordered several prints to give out to close friends. “
While most reproductions of the photo show only Einstein’s face, the original is a much broader shot and includes others who attended the party held at the Princeton Club.
