How can I stop my pomeranian losing its hair? Can my vet treat my dog's alopecia X?
OUR vet David Grant works his animal magic. A I HAVE seen this condition and I think your vet's diagnosis is very likely correct.Alopecia X is a peculiar, poorly understood skin complaint. The hair loss tends to affect the whole body but for some reason not the head and limbs. It is most commonly seen in pomeranians but also in other plush coat breeds.

These would include chow chows, keeshonds, samoyeds, Alaskan malamutes and miniature poodles. As the condition progresses the skin tends to become heavily-pigmented.Your dog's biopsy should confirm that the problem is hormonal, although the precise cause may not be discovered. Some of thehormonal diseases that are known to cause alopecia, such as a lack of thyroid hormone or excess cortisone, have recognisable clinical signs apart from baldness. Yet in some cases dogs with alopecia X are otherwise healthy. There are various treatments you could discuss with your vet. Neutering often causes the hair to grow back, although the alopecia may return later and there are also various drugs on the market that may help. Doing nothing at all is also an option - apart from remembering to buy him a warm coat in winter and a lighter one in summer.* David Grant MBE was a vet at the RSPCA Harmsworth Hospital for Animals. Write to him at Express Yourself, 10 Lower Thames Street, London EC3R 6EN. He is unable to enter into individual correspondence.. 00FastNews. New source of news.
