Demonstrations underway over Glyphosate re-license debate in Brussels
  • 7 years ago
As the debate over the safety of the world’s most widely used weed killer rages on in Brussels, demonstrations have been underway against Glyphosate.

Despite its ban some time ago there have been conflicting studies on the potential dangers of the herbicide causing cancer.

Whilst the European Chemicals Agency said that the substance is not carcinogenic, the World Health Organisation’s has since classified Glyphosate as a probable carcinogen.

The debate prompted the fastest growing citizens’ initiative in history demanding an end to its use and a reduction in pesticides generally.

The historic effort, spearheaded by a coalition of civil society groups, comes as European member states decide whether or not to issue a new license for Glyphosate.

EU governments will be asked to vote on this proposal after the summer.

For over 2 years, citizen pressure has stopped member states from agreeing to a full 10-year re-license.
