by Andrew CaringiCan a Mongolian shake up the world of sumo wrestling?Kyokutenho is Japan’s first Mongolian-born sumo master. Kyokutenho, who first broke into the sport when he was 16, is the master of a 260-year-old sumo “stable.” The 42-year-old now trains 11 wrestlers, who consume around 8,000 calories a day and live in the training facility. His rise comes 25 years after the ancient Japanese sport of sumo was opened to Mongolians in 1992. The strict tradition has recently alienated many Japanese youth and the sport is now dominated by foreign wrestlers. So, Kyokutenho is pushing the next generation of wrestlers into the ring.
