Politico is reporting that he told journalists flying with him on Air Force One Wednesday night, “We have a thing called health care. I’m sure you haven't been reading about it too much. I'd say the only thing more difficult than peace between Israel and the Palestinians is health care."
He added, “It's like this narrow road that's about a quarter of an inch wide. You get a couple here and you say, great, and then you find out you just lost four over here. Health care is tough.”
These comments are in contrast to ones Trump had made during the campaign; for instance, he tweeted in February 2016, “We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare - and nobody can do that like me. We will save $'s and have much better healthcare!”
The Washington Post notes that he also said at a rally in October, “My first day in office, I am going to ask Congress to put a bill on my desk getting rid of this disastrous law and replacing it with reforms that expand choice, freedom, affordability. It’s going to be so easy.”
However, the GOP-led effort has faced significant challenges from the Democrats and members of their own party; the New York Times is reporting that Senate leaders introduced an amended bill on Thursday to “help hold down insurance costs for consumers while allowing insurers to sell new low-cost, stripped down policies.”
