Trillion-Ton Iceberg Breaks Off Antarctic Ice Shelf

A trillion-ton iceberg calved off the Larsen ice shelf in Antarctica on Wednesday, July 12.According to the British Antarctic Survey, the new iceberg has an area of more than 6,000 sq km (2,300 sq m), larger than the state of Delaware.Prof David G Vaughan, a glaciologist and director of science with the British Antarctic Survey, said that if the Larsen C segment of the ice shelf starts to retreat significantly and eventually collapses, “then we will see another contribution to sea level rise.” Credit: British Antarctic Survey via Storyful
