The World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Boat
by Andrew CaringiThe world’s first boat powered only by renewable energy has begun a journey around the world.Originally from France, the Energy Observer is a hydrogen-powered boat with two main goals: to test these technologies in a marine environment, and to educate others on renewable resources. The Energy Observer is covered in solar panels and has two wind turbines on either side of the cabin. When there is no sun or wind it will use hydrogen produced on board by passing an electric current through purified ocean water that’s then compressed and fed into the boat’s motor. The boat was once a racing catamaran, but it’s now taking its time. After departing from Saint Malo, its around-the-world journey will include visits to 50 countries over 6 years. Its mission: to educate the world about climate change and the potential of renewable energy.
