'I had to listen': Trump Jr defends meeting with Russian lawyer

Like father like son: Donald Trump Jr took to Twitter on Monday (July 10) to defend his meeting last year with a Russian lawyer who promised damaging information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Initially he said the meeting focused on adoptions and he didn’t even mention the Clinton angle. Now he’s unapologetic about it – but says the meeting was basically pointless.

“Obviously I’m the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent…went nowhere but had to listen,” Trump Jr. said on Twitter.

“No inconsistency in statements, meeting ended up being primarily about adoptions. In response to further Q’s I simply provided more details,” he added.

The latest comments further back up a New York Times report claiming that when Trump Jr met last June with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, he expected to collect dirt on his father’s rival.

According to the newspaper, Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort tagged along, as well as his son in law Jared Kushner.

The meeting is bound to further fuel ongoing federal investigations into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the presidential election.
