Die US-Serie „Absentia“ dreht sich um eine FBI-Agentin Emily Byrne (Stana Katic), die einem berüchtigten Serienkiller aus Boston auf den Fersen ist. Dabei verschwindet die Agentin spurlos und wird für tot erklärt. Sechs Jahre später wird sie in einer Hütte im Wald gefunden - beinahe leblos und ohne Erinnerungen an die Zeit, als sie als vermisst galt. Als sie nach Hause zurückkehrt, erfährt sie, dass ihr Ehemann sich neu vermählt hat und ihr Sohn von einer anderen Frau großgezogen wird. Bald darauf wird sie in eine neue Mordserie verwickelt.
