Mossad was formed on December 13, 1949, as the Central Institute for Coordination at the recommendation of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion to Reuven Shiloah. Ben Gurion wanted a central body to coordinate and improve cooperation between the existing security services the army's intelligence department (AMAN), the Internal Security Service (Shin Bet), and the foreign office's "political department". In March 1951, it was reorganized and made a part of the prime minister's office, reporting directly to the prime minister.

इजराइल की सुरक्षा दुनिया में सबसे अभेद्य मानी जाती है। उसकी सबसे बड़ी वजह है, उसकी खुफिया एजेंसी मोसाद। मोसाद दुनिया की सबसे खतरनाक खुफिया एजेंसी मानी जाती है। पूरी दुनिया इसके एजेंट्स से खौफ खाती है।ये अपने दुश्मन को दुनिया के किसी भी कोने से निकालकर खत्म कर सकते हैं। मोसाद के खतरनाक एजेंट्स ने ऐसे ऐसे कारनामों को अंजाम दिया है कि दुनिया में इसके नाम का खौफ बोलता है। इजरायल की इस खुफिया एजेंसी के बारे में कहते हैं कि एक बार जो मोसाद की हिट लिस्ट में आ गया। उसका बचना नामुमकिन हो जाता है। एक खुफिया एजेंसी के तौर पर इसका जितना नाम है ये अपने काम करने के तरीके को लेकर उतना ही बदनाम है।
