President Trump on Monday tweeted an offer to help Charlie Gard, a baby in the UK who, on the order of the court, is set to be removed from life support.
President Trump on Monday tweeted an offer to help Charlie Gard, a 10-month-old baby in the U.K. who, on the order of the court, is set to be removed from life support.
Trump wrote, “If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.”
The situation Charlie and his parents are in has gained a great deal of attention in the U.K. and beyond.
The child suffers from a genetic mitochondrial condition that progressively diminishes brain health and muscle function, reports The Guardian.
The Independent notes that "Charlie cannot see, hear, move or cry and has been receiving treatment since last October."
His parents requested permission to take him out of the hospital and to the U.S. for an experimental treatment, but were denied.
The couple tried to challenge those decisions in court, but, last Tuesday, it was determined that the earlier ruling to keep the child in the hospital and remove him from life support is final.
Since, protesters have gathered to oppose that conclusion.
The Pope has also offered support to the family through a statement from the Vatican.
It notes, “he prays that [the parents’] wish to accompany and treat their child until the end isn’t neglected.”
