Democratic Representative Maxine Waters has been a vocal proponent of impeaching President Trump, but, in the wake of the president’s disparaging tweet about the hosts of ‘Morning Joe,’ she’s come up with another plan.
Waters tweeted on Thursday, “Women are outraged and fed up with this President. Impeachment isn't enough. Should we explore exile?”
Her comments followed the president’s Twitter attack on Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.
Earlier that day, Trump tweeted, in part, “low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!”
Criticism of those disparaging comments has been widespread and bipartisan.
Republicans who have spoken out include House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senator Lindsey Graham.
Ryan said during a Thursday press briefing, "I don’t see that as an appropriate comment…What we’re trying to do around here is improve the tone, the civility of the debate, and this, obviously, doesn’t help do that.”
Graham wrote on Twitter, “Mr. President, your tweet was beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America.”
Those working in the White House have been more inclined to stand with the president.
Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Thursday, “I think that the President has been attacked mercilessly on personal accounts by members on that program, and I think he’s been very clear that when he gets attacked he’s going to hit back.”
Meanwhile, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway offered her support on Friday, telling Fox & Friends, “As a woman who knows him and works for him, I'm very pleased at how he treats women in this workplace, the White House.”
