Brazilians Want to Ban Funk Music

by Anthony FalcoA businessman’s efforts to criminalize funk music in Brazil is quickly gaining national support. The proposal to ban funk music claims the genre promotes drug use and sexual violence, making it harmful to children. Already, the campaign to ban funk has collected 20,000 signatures and continues to rally support from those who want to censor the music. However, popular politician Romário de Souza Faria – who simply goes by Romário – is coming to funk musician’s aid and speaking out against the proposal. Romário, who calls himself an “eternal” fan of the genre, argues that the ban is unconstitutional. Congress will hold a public hearing on the ban but the proposal is still a long way from becoming a law.
