Apache Helicopter Fires Lasers
by Anthony FalcoLasers are finally making their transition from the big screen to the battlefield. The U.S. Army has fired a high-energy laser from an Apache helicopter for the first time ever. The laser, manufactured by defense contror Raytheon, was reportedly able to locate, fire on, and hit a target located about one mile away. The laser is guided by an infrared sensor that provides precise targeting information and beam control. The military says that laser fire provides a tactical advantage to conventional munitions. Current prototypes are silent, invisible, and may cut down on collateral damage.Despite this recent breakthrough, high-energy laser weapons are still early in their testing phase and it’s unclear when these weapons will be operational and available for combat.
