OJ Simpson may be getting out of prison this year

LOS ANGELES — After spending nearly a decade in prison, O.J. Simpson is scheduled for a parole hearing in July which many say could lead to his release within the year.

Once a respected Hall-of-Fame football star, Simpson rose to notoriety after being accused of murder.

CNN reports that on June 13, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home.

DNA testing revealed some blood found at the crime scene contained Simpson’s DNA. Blood from both victims was found in his car, and in a glove found at his estate. Hair retrieved from Goldman’s shirt and from a blue knit cap found near his body both turned out to belong to Simpson.

Simpson had a history of domestic violence, which prosecutors claim eventually led to him killing his ex-wife and her friend.

But his defense team cited improper handling of the evidence, and further claimed that certain pieces were planted or tampered with, pointing out that the detective who found them had a history of racism. They accused the LAPD of framing Simpson because he was black.

A jury later determined he was not guilty of murder.

In 2007, Simpson tried to recover some sports memorabilia he said was stolen from him, and enlisted some friends to pose as buyers, according to a Clark County, Nevada court document.

He and his group then armed themselves with guns and ambushed the memorabilia dealers in a Vegas hotel room. He threatened the dealers while his cohorts stuffed the memorabilia into pillow cases. The group was arrested days later, but only Simpson was eventually charged and jailed.
