Newly released documents have revealed that the Nazis had planned to target the Panama Canal around the time of World War II, notes Gizmodo.
The previously classified materials, which span the years between 1937 to 1944, were unveiled by Chilean officials on Thursday.
According to The Telegraph, the files indicate that Chile’s “counterintelligence unit thwarted the [canal] plan after it detained the people leading it in the country's main port of Valparaiso. No other details on the plot were provided.”
The documents reveal that about 40 people were reportedly arrested by the special unit which was formed to combat the growing influence of Nazi-type groups in Chile.
As Hector Espinoza, a police official, remarked about those right-wing extremists, “If they had prospered in their objectives, it could have changed not only Chile's history, but the history of the whole world.”
Despite the distance, there is evidence of strong connections between Nazi supporters in Germany and like-minded National Socialists in countries like Chile and Argentina, reports The Guardian.
In addition to conspiring on attacks, the files indicate that there were South American spies feeding information about Allied forces to Germany.
