According to Politico, she has yet to find a lawmaker willing to sponsor the proposal--which seeks to provide six weeks of leave--despite having a series of meetings on it this week.
On Tuesday, she attended a GOP session led by Florida Senator Marco Rubio and attended by Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer who said afterwards, “We’re trying to make the Administration aware of what we all have here in the Senate and the House so we can coordinate and put forward some good ideas that are going to take care of families.”
The following day, the first daughter and senior adviser to the President met with Republican representatives including House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to discuss various issues including paid family leave, notes The Hill.
Despite her efforts and the apparent support of some conservatives, Politico has called it “a tough sell even for a seasoned politician, which the president’s daughter is not.”
According to NPR, at least some Republicans would resist another government social program while others would be reluctant to introduce additional mandates even though the administration has offered to give flexibility to states.
Nevertheless, Ivanka seems to be staying optimistic about the outcome of these conversations, tweeting Tuesday, “Just left a productive meeting on the Hill to discuss issues affecting American working families, including childcare & paid family leave!”
