Turkish Woman Fights Back Against Bus Attacker

by Jonathan SangerCollege student Melisa Saglam was sitting on a bus in Istanbul, Turkey, when a man physically assaulted her. The June attack occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Video footage of the incident shows Saglam fighting back, chasing the man after he appeared to have slapped her face. The footage has now gone viral.The suspect, Ercan Kizilates, was arrested but was later released, saying her clothes were “too revealing” and that he was turned on.Women have long held equal rights in Turkey, but violence against women has increased under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
