Canada police investigate theft of mummified toe served in drinks

DAWSON CITY, YUKON, CANADA — A famous hotel bar in the Canadian northwest has reported a precious mummified toe missing, and has police on the hunt to find the criminal who snatched it.

The Downtown hotel in Dawson City, Yukon uses the blackened digits in their signature whisky drink. Customers who dare to touch the toe to their lips receives a certificate that states the went through with it. The tradition has been ongoing since the 1920s, and the hotel has racked up several toes since. At least eight have gone missing or been swallowed, both accidentally and on purpose.

Their newest toe was donated by a man who had to have it surgically removed. After curing it in salt for six months, the staff began dropping it in drinks this past weekend. When a customer came in and begged a bartender to let him try the drink after the designated “toe-time,”she obliged. The next thing she knew, the pickled toe had vanished.

The hotel does keep a few spare toes in the reserve, but hopes to retrieve the stolen one. The suspect who took off with the toe did leave his sourtoe certificate behind, so the authorities may have a lead in the case.
