In Nordic mythology, "ragnarök" means "apocalypse," which is the general theme of the film. The film begins with a narrator from the early middle ages describing the origins of the world, the gods, and mankind; he then describes the apocalypse: Ragnarök. The story moves on to show us how 1,300 years ago the first Iceland settlers found the home of their gods on the island, an island shaped by unique lava formations and containing the violence and beauty of volcanoes and waterfalls. These mysterious places play a key part of the film, with the sagas of the first settlers are enacted; the film also touches upon the legend of Sigurs, the dragon slayer, who's tale is echoed in the Central-European Nibelungenlied. This is the dramatic, final installment of "The Myths and Sagas of the North" without moderation.
